Cushing Terrell proudly announces the expansion of the historic preservation practice with the appointment of a senior industry professional to the role of Historic Preservation Manager. The historic preservation and traditional architecture practitioner brings in more than 40 years of experience, making a strategic addition to uphold the firm's commitment to preserving and reintegrating historic places through innovative, context-sensitive design.
Working with teams of various disciplines within the firm, the manager will oversee preservation projects and provide input, working with clients to seek opportunities and compromises between development needs and cultural and historic integrity.
A Wealth of Preservation Expertise
With a career spanning from North America to England and New Zealand, the incoming Historic Preservation Manager brings an in-depth understanding concerning the regulatory, environmental, and social parameters of preservation. They have witnessed environmental impact assessments done, taught the use of tools for preservation, and interpreted the Secretary of the Interior's Standards for the Treatment of Historic Properties.
Beyond technical knowledge, the person has been recognized for their public engagement skills and collaborative approach, which supports communities and stakeholders going through change while respecting the character of their sites.
"Historic places matter. They hold stories, character, and cultural value that deserve thoughtful management," said the new manager. "At Cushing Terrell, I am thrilled to be part of a talented, diverse team working to ensure that historic preservation supports vibrant, inclusive communities and embraces appropriate change. I look forward to aiding clients with embedding preservation in their development goals-from climate adaptation to affordable housing."

As part of Cushing Terrell’s growing preservation services, the manager will focus on:
Identifying development strategies that mitigate climate impacts.
Leveraging historic preservation as a tool for economic growth and revitalization.
Assisting Certified Local Governments with ordinance updates, design guidelines, and design review.
Partnering with federal agencies to meet Section 106 obligations efficiently and effectively.
Supporting private property owners in exploring increased density and affordable housing solutions that respect historic integrity.
Advancing a Longstanding Commitment
Cushing Terrell has long accepted that historic preservation is most effective when approached through architecture, planning, and adaptive reuse. With the introduction of this dedicated leadership role, the firm sees a new opportunity to deepen its impact and expand the reach of its preservation efforts across communities and project types.
“This is a meaningful milestone for us,” shared Associate Principal Nicole Dovel-Moore. “We’ve been, up until now, very fortunate to welcome someone with such depth of experience and passion for preservation. That person brings a strategic lens and collaborative spirit with which communities and clients can look to preserve and reimagine their historic places.”
Adding to this, Murray Miller remarked on the alignment of his values with the firm’s long-standing mission:
“Cushing Terrell’s commitment to integrating historic preservation into the broader design and planning process deeply resonates with me,” said Miller. “It’s not just about saving old buildings—it’s about honoring a place’s story while adapting to the evolving needs of the people who live there. I’m excited to work with a team that understands the power of heritage to shape vibrant, sustainable, and inclusive communities.”
